Naturopathy
The principles of Naturopathic Medicine stem from the traditional healing wisdom of
"eclecticism" and "nature cure". Its effectiveness today has been significantly enhanced by
modern science and technology. This balance between old and new is reflected in the range of
naturopathic health care approaches offered at the Kilborn Naturopathic & Wellness Centre.
Naturopathic Medicine offers a unique balance of Eastern & Western philosophies towards
health and healing. It offers patient-centered care, respecting the body's innate healing abilities
and taps into the Vis Medicatrix Naturae (the healing power of nature). With a thorough understanding
of how the body works, and a respect for traditional systems of healing, Naturopathic Doctors are experts in
providing holistic health.
Naturopathic treatments can complement conventional medical treatments or can be used
effectively on their own. The aim of the Naturopathic Doctor is always to support and stimulate
the body's ability to heal.
One of the great things about naturopathic medicine is that there are different treatment modalities
that can be incorporated into your health and wellness plan. Please click on the links below to learn
more about some of the core treatments offered by NDs:
Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture
This is a system of care which includes acupuncture, dietary recommendations and herbal medicines to help bring the body into balance. These various treatments are used to eliminate disease and restore balance in the body's functions.
Widely recognized in Western society as an effective treatment for pain, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine have been used for thousands of years in China and other countries as a complete holistic approach to regulating the flow of Qi energy and restoring health.
Research is ongoing as to why acupuncture works, but it has been found to be helpful in a number of conditions including arthritis, hormonal imbalances, anxiety and depression.
Botanical Medicine
This is a plant-based medicine using whole plants individually and in combinations as teas, tinctures, capsules and other compounds to assist in the recovery from injury and disease. These compounds are organic in nature, they are more compatible with body chemistry and act as powerful medicines to boost the body's immune system and prevent disease while having few side effects. Herbs are part of traditional healing systems around the world. There are hundreds of plants with known medicinal properties, some of which our modern day drugs are derived from. Digitalis, for example is derived from Foxglove.
Clinical Nutrition
"Let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food" - Hippocrates
This is the foundation of Naturopathic Medicine. Through the use of dietetics, natural hygiene, fasting, and nutritional supplementation, many medical conditions can be treated more
effectively and with virtually no side effects with clinical nutrition than they can by other means.
Nutrition is the cornerstone of health and wellness. Without it, health and healing cannot take place. While treatment of illness can be achieved through dietary changes, prevention of future illness is also very important. The role of food and nutrition is well understood in illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes, but diet can also play a role in conditions such as migraines and inflammatory.
Individual diets and nutritional supplements may be recommended to address deficiencies, treat
disease processes and promote health.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy was founded in the late 18th century by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, who described the Law of Similars. This law states that when a substance in large doses causes certain symptoms, in small doses it can cure these same symptoms. Homeopathy is experiencing a revival in North American and is used extensively in Europe and India.
Homeopathy has a long tradition and is based on the principle of "like cures like". It is a subtle yet powerful form of medicine that uses tiny doses of naturally occurring substances to stimulate the body's ability to heal itself energetically. Homeopathy is a powerful tool and effects healing on a physical as well as an emotional level.
Due to its gentle and non-toxic nature, homeopathic remedies are ideally suited to children and young infants.
Hydrotherapy
This is one of the oldest medicines. It takes advantage of the healing power of water. It is the body's reaction to hot and cold water applications, that help to stimulate the immune system, influence the production of stress hormones, and invigorate the circulation and digestion
resulting in improved blood flow and reduced pain sensitivity. Therapeutic peat baths are also
used to greatly improve energy levels, decrease pain and inflammation and for stress
management.
Physical Medicine
Musculoskeletal complaints and neurological conditions are addressed through various methods such as therapeutic manipulation of muscles and bones, therapeutic exercises, gentle electrical therapies, and ultrasound.
Lifestyle Counseling
As part of the holistic nature of Naturopathic Medicine, NDs try to assess all aspects of a person's life that can impact on their physical, emotional and spiritual health. Mental attitudes and emotional states are significant contributors to health and disease. Techniques such as counseling and stress management are key in helping patients to implement positive and lasting lifestyle changes. There is great emphasis on personal responsibility and the ND in the role of teacher will assist clients in taking charge of themselves on the road to optimal health.
What conditions do you treat?
The answer to that is that we do not treat an illness, rather our focus is to treat a person.
Our goal is to create health, not treat disease, because disease is nothing more than a grouping of symptoms.
If you only treat the symptom, the body will not heal and lasting change cannot take place. By encouraging
the body to function properly, by restoring communication and biochemical balance between all the systems of
the body, health can be achieved. Once this happens symptoms will clear on their own - for symptoms are nothing more than
a warning signal that an imbalance exists beneath the surface of the body.
The following is an incomplete list of common conditions (symptoms) that patients often present with:
|
Chronic Fatigue
Arthritis
Diabetes
Cancer
Irritable Bowel
Ulcers, Reflux
Skin Conditions
Allergies
PMS
|
Elevated Cholesterol Hypertension
Menopausal Symptoms
Colds, Flu
Headaches
Anxiety, Stress
Depression
Weight Management
Smoking Cessation

Laboratory Diagnostics
Biochemical tests are valuable for a number of reasons. They are excellent diagnostic tools and can help us determine what is going on for you inside your body. They also act as markers of progress. We can repeat some tests after a period of working together to monitor the improvements in health throughout the treatment.
These tests are not covered by OHIP and clients are charged at the time of their appointment.
Some tests are done on site and others are mailed to external laboratories.
If you are interested in a particular test that you do not see listed yet on this website, please contact us to find out if it is now available.
Our clinic is affiliated with local blood laboratories in order to get routine or specialized blood work done upon requisition.
In-House Urinary Tests
Koenisburg Adrenal Function Test - measures adrenal insufficiency resulting from chronic stress or illness.
Urinary Indican - detects bowel toxicity resulting from improper digestion. Enables us to
determine treatment protocols to improve digestion and absorption of valuable nutrients.
Urinalysis - screens for urinary tract infections, kidney disease and disease of other organs that results in abnormal metabolites appearing in the urine.
Oxidata - a monitoring system for testing the amount of free radical activity within the body.
People of all ages can benefit from knowing if they are getting enough antioxidants in their diets to prevent free radical damage to their cells. This damage can expedite disease processes and aging.
Complete Vitamin and Mineral Assessment
With one simple blood test we can now analyze your nutritional status. Results obtained can uncover deficiencies
that standard tests may miss. Even if you eat a balanced diet, exercise and take a multi-vitamin you may still have
a deficiency.
Hair Analysis
Determines the level of toxic substances such as lead, mercury and aluminium in the body.
Heavy metal toxicity has been associated with many disease states.
Saliva Testing (through Rocky Mountain Analytical Lab, Alberta)
Male and Female Salivary Hormone Testing
Adrenal Function Panel
Zinc Tally - indicates Zinc levels in the body. Zinc is important nutrient for proper immune
system functioning and for male reproductive health.
Blood Tests (through Rocky Mountain Analytical Lab, Alberta)
Food Allergy Testing
Inhalants Allergy Testing
Omega 3 - Fatty Acid levels
Other (through Rocky Mountain Analytical Labs, Alberta)
Glucose Breath Test for insulin resistance
